Convening One Pre-work
~ LEARNER DRIVEN ~
Welcome!
We would like to start by saying WELCOME to the LAUNCH Cohort 2 Convening 1!
In preparation for each convening, we will ask that you take 20-35 minutes to explore some resources and build your learning around specific topics we plan to address. Because this is our first convening, the pre-work includes a LAUNCH introduction video that will build your understanding of Ohio’s work in personalized learning as well as a look at the purpose and plan for the LAUNCH convenings. Feel free to pause, rewatch the video, or come back to review this information at any time.
What's Convening One's Topic?
In Convening 1, we will focus on the what and why of personalized learning, as well as a deeper dive into the Learner Driven component of the OH Personalized Learning Framework. Below you will see the indicators from the Learner Driven component:
1.1 Learners set goals and make choices about how to accomplish them.
1.2 Learners monitor progress towards future goals with appropriate instructional support.
1.3 Learners and educators collaborate to develop profiles that provide a narrative of their assets, barriers to learning, needed supports and future career goals.
*For reference you can find the entire OH Personalized Learning Framework HERE.
Take some time to build learning around our planned convening topic by exploring the resources below.
Something to Watch
Watch the video and reflect on the questions below:
In what ways does Devin Vodicka's message connect to the indicators from Learner Driven?
What comes up for you in Devin's two analogies for our school systems: a train versus a car (5:30 to 7:20)
Something to Read
Option 1: Who Owns the Learning in Your Classroom?
In the book Empower (by John Spencer and A.J. Juliani) John Spencer reflects on his early years of teaching. John says his learners weren't owning their learning and upon further reflection, he realized he was doing all the work. He says:
I chose the resources
I chose the content
I asked the questions
I wrote the instructions
I managed the project progress
I chose the tasks
I wrote the objectives
I picked the standards
I decided on the format
I determined whether or not the work was any good

Option 2: Personalization vs Differentiation vs Individualization vs Whole Class
Barbara Bray developed an excellent comparison of these teaching and learning approaches. Consider the following questions when analyzing the chart that can be found HERE.
How does a learner in a personalized learning classroom own their learning?
How does personalized learning help us determine the needs of the learner?
Examples From the Field
Personalized Learning Slider
Mason City Schools, located in Southwest Ohio, shared this resource with Ohio educators, which shows how they approach learner-designed practices.
Consider how you might begin shifting the levers in your classroom throughout this convening.
Mason suggests other areas where these “levers” can be used. Which of those levers would you consider using in your classroom?
